An auto electrician visually inspected inside my alternator and told me that the problem was definitely not the rectifier. Can this be done?

I highly doubt it. The 3 diodes (one that may have fried) can be tested by taking the alternator apart and tested. I'd run the alternator and just test it to make sure you are getting 13.7 volts or better at the battery posts.

No. Visual alone is not sufficient. Visual exam and some electrical checks can lead to a proper conclusion.
