How far can you be from the curb when parallel parking in the road test?

Also, I'm confused as to how the test works. Is it like a normal test in which certain things wrong deduct points, and as long as you have enough points in the end you pass? Or is it a "succeed at everything or you fail everything" kind of deal?

Other answer:

In most places you must be within 18 inches or 50 cm. of the curb with your tires.
When you park you MUST be no more than 2 inches from the curb.
