I have a 1996 Maxum 1700 with Mercruiser Alpha one. I started the engine with the trim up 3 times in a year. How bad is that for the I/O?

can doing that 3 times in a year mess anything up or would I have to do a lot more?
I started boat with trim all way up when I launched. I might have done this 3 times in the past year. how bad is that?

Ther is a difference between trim and tilt. Trim is slightly raised from full down and has a limit switch that only allows the drive to raise up a little bit. Tilt is when the drive is all the way up for trailering. Now if you started the the engine at full trim no problem. If you started the drive at full trailer position, it puts a whole lot of stress on the u-joints. U-joints can handle a 22.5 degree flex while turning but not more. That is why the steering side to side is only 45 degrees max. To tell if you hurt the u-joints or not the simple test is to start the engine with the drive full down, then turn the steering wheel to one side then the other if you hear noise when the drive is fully turned your u-joints are bad. !

The engine will start with the trim in any position as long as the out drive is in neutral it will not be a problem.

Life Kinda Sucks:
If you put the I/O in forward or reverse while it is ALL the way up, output shafts and knuckles can kink and break.

If you start the motor, make sure the I/O is in neutral position.

*You know you said "muffs", and it occurred to me..I thought you meant MUFFLER
I just realized that you may have meant the water muffs for flushing…. that's how your engine keeps cool and it's terrible for the motor to run it without a water source.

My bad
