I would like to travel by train because I believe it would be a nice experience and I heard it is cheaper than flying. (Is that true, and cheaper by how much?) I will most likely be travelling from Charlotte, NC to Fredericksburg, VA to stay with family and from there, take a train to Pittsburgh, PA. And then straight back to NC. What should I know? How long will each trip take? How much will it cost? What's the best way to get tickets?
Anonymous: You can ride the train. It takes longer. Cost when you add in time and food can be more than Air travel. Part of this is actually traveling at SEE level. If you want to experience the journey from A to B. If you just want Destination flying is easier and faster.
Amtrak has a web site to help you out. Ticket price depends on WHEN you want to travel and what you want for a seat. Time depends on your exact route.
Your trip would involve a change in trains. If you can start at Charlotte you can get direct train to Philadelphia.
For you all by train Charlotte Sc to Philadelphia to Pittsburg to Fredericks burg. You DO NOT need to go BOTH directions on train
Suggest train there and fly home.
many trains connect in Philadelphia If your Freinds in Fredricksburg can pick you up at nearby places you have more choices. Washington for example.
Culpepper about 40 miles away also has a stop for Amtrak on the Crescent.
It really depends on what you want for your journey. The train is part of it just the ride and view of getting there.. It is not FREE or CHEAP it is not expensive.
If you can get a ride to and from the Crescent that is your easiest.
You are aware there are these people called TRAVEL AGENTS they make their living finding out this information.
You can also CALL Amtrak and the HUMANS there will help you plan a route.
They are very friendly.
Amtrak is the only choice and they do not have service in Fredericksburg. They do have service in Pittsburgh and in Charlotte, so you could take the train back. Sometimes the rain is cheaper, sometimes not. You just have to look up the prices and compare. http://www.amtrak.com/home
Go to the Amtrak website – it has maps of all the routes and cities that it serves, details of the train services, fares and so on. It would be a good place to start.
How do I get a metro north train going to new York from Meriden ct
thanks. I didn't know that there isn't service there. Do you know if there is service in Asheville, NC? and anything near Fredericksburg?
