Even though I'm providing the car and driving and also providing my uncles empty house in LA as a place where we can sleep.

Nice friends. They get a FREE place to stay and a FREE ride.
You save money if you have less weight in the car.
Leave friends behind and go by yourself.

It is your car. It is not a business like a taxi.
You are not doing this for PROFIT. You contribute something and the others contribute something else.

Make a deal among yourself and go with it.

8 hour drive. Meal stop along the way . Whatever.

Should you pay all the cost NO do you get a FREE ride NO.

What compensation does Uncle get?

You are dealing with some Free loaders get the money up front.

After the ride much harder to collect.
You can use something like "gas buddy.com" to calculate cost of gas. That is not the only cost of your drive. For example food along the way.Parking in SF. Tolls on the Bridges depending which way you go and so on.

I assume they will nap along the way and be ready to party when they arrive leaving you to rest up for the return trip. Will you be unpacking their luggage too?

SeaTurtle:
Your car, your rules. Tell them you're providing the transportation and lodgings, the least they can do is pick up the gas.

IF you were going there anyway and you invited them without mentioning any costs then yes it's fair BUT it would be nice of them if they offered to help out.

IF you planned it together, then no it's not fair & they need to pitch in.

Mr.357:
The fair way is to figure 55 cents per mile, and each person pays their fair share of that. That covers wear and tear on your vehicle and the money from the others should cover all of the gas.
?:
yes it is fair hat u have to pay gas money because the money usually goes to the government to get new tings for our country
Sal*UK:
If they were true friends, they would offer to split the cost of fuel at the very least.
