Remember watching planes landing & taking off at the airport?

Don't think you can do that now.

Back in the 90's I was parked by O'Hare and was chased away.

Needless to say this was before Sept. 11th.

You can still do that.

When I was near the Dallas Fort Worth international airport, there was a fence a couple hundred feet from the runway. I watched many planes take off/land.

Doug Freyburger:
Very close to the end of the runway at LAX there is an In-N-out Burger. It is a favorite stop for many on arriving in Los Angeles metro. Get a burger and sit outside. You can watch the planes landing. It's close enough that you can see the faces in the windows of the planes. The eyes get huge when they see you sitting outside watching them go by.

It's every bit as fun having a window seat on the left side of the plane and watching the folks eat their burgers as it is having an outside seat at In-N-Out watching the people in the planes.

Yep. After Wayne's World it became a big thing. Spent lots of evenings at YVR Runway 26 (L) watching them come in. They even built a park for spotting with picnic tables, playground, and spotters guide. Pretty sure you can still do it.

If you don't have any luck at ORD, try Midway. It's surrounded by public roads… earning it's name 'The Worlds Busiest Square Mile'.

You can get a McDonald's meal at Frankfurt Int'l, and watch the whole runway and ramp scenario right out of the huge windows.
Joe:
Good times when I was a kid; bicycling over to Teterboro (NJ).

Now, my nearby regional airport does have one picnic table outside the fence. I've never seen anybody using it.

(But I've also been chased away from a roadside spot at the same airport.)

St martin looks like the best place on videos, the planes are so low when landing, im going there someday just to watch planes land and takeoff.

???

my home airport has picnic tables. the big international airport has a little park off the end of the runways and an observation area in the terminal building.

later: the "big international airport" is yvr, and the little park off the end of 26 left is a going concern.
