Wanting something that is a little unique and is fun too drive.
I am have for awhile now considered getting a mazda miata but all the sites I check say its a girl's car.
What Never said. Think reliability and safety. Something "fun and unique" for 5K =something that breaks down frequently and costs a bomb to fix.
If you don't need very reliable transportation, then that's a different story. The Mazda 3 and Civi recommendations are good ones. Maybe even an old Infiniti G20. They can be found with a manual transmission, and are exceptionally reliable. Nice driving cars, too.
The Miata is the pinnacle of driving pleasure. But if you feel like you are not worthy then you still have a few more options:
Mercedes CLK Class
Insurance is largely based on the value of the car, so contrary to popular belief, it will not cost more than the car. Now, liability insurance is going to be dependent on your driving record. If your car breaks, you fix it, don't take it to the dealership. And whatever you do, don't let anyone persuade you into buying a Corolla, you'll regret it!
With $5000 you need to worry about reliability. And insurance.
I would suggest a 4 door Civic, Corolla or mazda 3.
Forget fun to drive and unique. Those things cost more.
Early 00's Cadillac or Lincoln.
No such thing as "a little unique". Something is either unique or it isn't.
