What s the difference between an M1 license and a Motorcycle Endorsement?

I already have a class c license and I just passed my motorcycle test to get my M1 license so now my drivers license says "class: CM1" but I was just watching some YouTube videos where a biker gets pulled over and the cop said "I m just making sure you have your motorcycle endorsement"

Do I

Do I need an endorsement if I have a M1 license?

It's dependent on where you live, but for the most part a motorcycle license and motorcycle endorsement are basically the same thing, but the difference is motorcycle endorsement usually means you have another license(in your case your class c license) so the endorsement is added to that license, whereas you can get a motorcycle license without having a car drivers license, and you get a individual license just for motorcycles and aren't allowed to drive a car with it. Making it an endorsement is basically just a way to not give you a second license card, but still separating it from a regular drivers license.
JetDoc:
Different states use different words to mean the same thing. Some states issue a motorcycle ENDORSMENT as an addition to a basic drivers license that says you are also authorized to ride motorcycles. Other states issue a separate license for motorcycle riders. I believe California is the only US state that issues different categories of motorcycle rider licenses (M1 or M2)
Dimo J:
License: Motorcycle only.
Endorsement: Car license, may ride a motorcycle.

VC12804.9(b)(4) Class M1. A two-wheel motorcycle or a motor-driven cycle. Authority to operate a vehicle included in a class M1 license may be granted by endorsement on a class A, B, or C license upon completion of an appropriate examination.

You can have a motorcycle license. With a motorcycle license you are not legally allowed to drive a car. California is one of several States that will issue a motorcycle only driver license. These States will issue a motorcycle permit and/or license without your needing a car license.

You can have a motorcycle endorsement on your car (or other class) driver license. As far as I know, most States do not issue motorcycle licenses — they only issue a motorcycle endorsement on other classes of driver licenses. Most States require a driver license (not permit) before you can get a motorcycle permit and/or endorsement.
