Sean: Gunship Pilot, by Robert F Hartley, covers much of it well. The different missions had different profiles, but all helicopters attracted small arms, RPG, and recoilless fire like crazy. Recon got it worst; getting shot at was how they found the enemy.

I wasn't a pilot but I served in the 1st Marine Air Wing in Danang Vietnam for 2 1/2 years and I remember there were 2 enlisted men, both E-9s one was a Black Master Gunnery Sgt and the other was a Sgt Major who they said were the Last enlisted men to hold those positions (chopper pilots) and they were good friends with each other and I was always delighted to hear them BSing with each other and other enlisted men. I don't remember the Sgt Majors name but I remember Master Gunny Hines who also was an expert with his 1911 A1 at the shooting range. I was supposed to be stationed at Iwakuni Japan, but never made it there as LBJ had different plans for us in August 65'.

My brother in law was dustoff pilot in Nam. I was in the blue water Navy off shore (Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club) To this day he still does not talk about it. It was Hell. After delivering wounded back to base they had to hose out the blood.

You might need to narrow your question a little bit. Gunship? Dustoff? Recon?
