Why do the engineers have such long beards? WTH!?

I counted about 20 engineers with long beards-is it a railroad thing?

Are you talking about engineers who operate trains, design and build things, or combat engineers? I am a mechanical engineer and I don't have a beard. I did have a mustache for a while though.

Having said that, it is a tradition for combat engineers of the French Foreign Legion to grow beards. Here is a picture of some on parade:

Some of their duties take place outside the train. A beard is good for when they are passing through cold climates or inclement conditions and need to do something outside.

It could either just be part of the job criteria or that is how they choose to dress.
