I just don't understand what makes Friday afternoon traffic so bad, because Friday morning traffic is notably light. Are there really that many more people running errands, getting out of town, or doing other things on Friday's? Many people do not ever work on Friday, or decide to take certain Friday's off. Also, it seems like Thursday afternoons are a little worse that Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. What puts more people on the roads during Thursday afternoons?

Nick:
If you say Fridays in your town is usually not a working day, then that must be the reason why there is traffic. People are going to parks, museums or shopping centers when they are not working. Thursday afternoon is super traffic because that's when people are off from work to go to those said places.

We can only guess as much as to the reason of the traffic situation.

Percyqted:
It's POETS day.

People are finishing work early.
Those that finished even earlier are going shopping.
Loads of people are trying to be some place else, the reverse happens on a Sunday when they all try to return.
Those that don't finish early get caught up with the early finishers trying to shop or get away.

Doug Freyburger:
Other days people know exactly where they are going to and from. They have time to carefully optimize their trip.

On Fridays more people are driving to unfamiliar destinations.

Many have flex time, and they get out early. I have it, and use it regularly during the time before Orientation.
